Idaho River Talks: An expedition down the Middle Fork and up the Big Horn Crags
Join us for a night of celebrating Idaho's Wild and Scenic rivers in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This piece of legislation protects some of the most remote and scenic places in the United States. Come to Idaho River Sports for an expedition down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and up to the jagged Big Horn Crags.
River lovers typically think of the Middle Fork as a summer float trip, anxiously crossing their fingers that they will get lucky in the permit lottery. Last April, a group of six skiers and boaters got a unique springtime look at the river canyon and the highest peaks of the Big Horn Crags. The week-long trip included flying into the Middle Fork, paddling the river canyon to base camps and skiing for three days up in the remote Big Horn Crags.
The weather and unknown terrain were the biggest challenges the adventurers faced, both in planning and during the trip. All of the time and preparations facilitated access to the Frank Church Wilderness during the spring, where the group was rewarded with active wildlife, empty stretches of river and fresh powder high in the mountains.
The goal for this group was not to be the first to ski something, but to their knowledge, they were the first group to ski those high peaks. This unique route pushed everyone to fully commit to the trip and it took all of their skills collectively to make it through safely. The trip became much more than just skiing and rafting, it solidified the group's motivation to put effort into taking opportunities to seek adventure and to appreciate the wild areas we have so close to home in Idaho. This is a group of husbands and fathers so it was especially nice to have a trip into such remote country so close to home.
This group's experiences only grew their appreciation for Wilderness and how important it is to support organizations that help fight to protect these extraordinary waterways.
"We are excited and humbled to show the images and tell the stories from our trip in hopes it will expand everyone's awareness of how special the Middle Fork and the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return are."
