Japan JUMPS into Boise
JUMP is thrilled to bring the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to Boise through Olympic broadcasts streamed to the JUMPotron screen in the JUMP Park. The public is invited to bring their gold-medal spirit to enjoy the kick-off Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremonies on Friday, July 23rd from 4 to 10 p.m., a free community event designed to inspire and bring people together to have fun and understand that there is more that unites us than divides us.
This years’ motto, Unity by Emotion, was selected to inspire people of various backgrounds to acknowledge each other and connect through the emotions evoked by the Summer Games. In the spirit of unity and harmony, the JUMP Park has been transformed into Tokyo, showcasing the host country’s incredible culture with massive installations, Japanese-inspired experiences and participatory activities that celebrate traditions and food from Tokyo and beyond.
In keeping with tradition where the Opening Ceremonies are a grand event for the host country to show off its unique culture to the world, this celebration will commence with Japanese Taiko drumming performances and the Lighting of the Olympic Cauldron (JUMP-style). We’ve also rounded up a few local Olympians including high jump gold medalist Dick Fosbury who revolutionized the high jump event with a “back-first” technique known as the Fosbury Flop, Stacy Dragila, an Olympic gold medalist and a multiple World Champion pole vaulter and pioneer in the women's event, and Representative Muffy Davis, a former alpine skier and Paralympic cyclist from Sun Valley, Idaho. These former Olympians will share an inspirational message following a warm welcome from the regional Japanese Consul General. And watch in awe as Kendo and Laido demonstrations round out the exciting opening presentations.
The evening would not be complete without Japanese cuisine from Sushi Bros, Tiki Teriyaki, and limited edition Matcha ice cream from The Stil – all located beneath traditional Japanese red lanterns in Celebration Circle. And be sure to visit the Share Studio to sample authentic Gyozas (pot stickers) and learn how to make your own as Yoshie Fujimoto shares her Japanese culinary talents.
Get into the spirit by making an Olympic-style medal highlighting your unique talent then take a selfie on the Olympic Medals Podium, learn to write in beautiful Japanese print, and let local artist Jessie Swimeley teach you techniques for folding origami cranes. If you are inspired to compete in games yourself, join in the fun Olympic-themed competitions (with a JUMP twist) in the Front Lawn.
Continue enjoying Boise’s warm summer nights watching the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on our big screen through August 2nd. A special thanks to our friends and collaborators at KTVB Idaho’s News Channel 7 and the Japanese Consulate for helping us bring the Tokyo Games to JUMP and Boise!!
